Fingerprints

Fingerprints

15 x 10 x 3cm
This book was created in response to a creative writing workshop held at Timespan by the writer Eleanor Thom. The group wrote six-word stories, including one by Eleanor that read simply: ‘She had fingerprints on her eyelids’. This short sentence haunted me on many different levels so I made the book to try to draw together some of the ideas behind it, including iconic imagery from the Surrealist film ‘Un Chien Andalou’, the idea of fingerprints as a trace of a crime committed, and the connection between eyelids and cosmetic surgery – all of which convey a sense of intimate physical threat. The book also makes use of computer concordances to investigate the impression of menace suggested by the story.
